Is this just what getting older feels like now?

It usually isn't. Strength, mobility and movement work for people whose body has stopped keeping up with the rest of their life, and who suspect there's more in there than picking up the shopping.

You know the feeling if

  • Picking up your kids costs you something it didn't used to.
  • Your knees or ankles start complaining an hour into a hike.
  • The shopping has quietly become a two-handed job.
  • You've trained consistently for years and the needle has barely moved.
  • There's one thing you've stopped attempting. A headstand, a heavy lift, something you've filed under "not for me."
  • You were more athletic at twenty-five and you've assumed that was the ceiling.
  • You've built workarounds around a stiff shoulder or a cranky knee so slowly that you no longer mention it to anyone.

None of that is a character flaw. It's what happens when a body hasn't been asked to do anything new in a long time.

Why what you've tried hasn't worked

The gap was never information. You already know you should train. You've probably read more than most coaches.

Generic programmes aren't wrong, they're just not yours. They were written for nobody in particular, which usually means they were written for somebody else.

Consistency isn't willpower, it's relationship. Most people don't fall off because the plan was bad. They fall off because nobody was actually invested in whether they showed up.

And most training only trains what you're already good at.Lift for long enough and you get strong and stiff. Stretch for long enough and you get loose and weak. Nobody trains speed or power after about thirty, so nobody has any. The interesting work sits in between.

How I work

Jonny coaching a client through a movement, hands extended in demonstration

We work together, not to a template.I'm supporting you and I'm there for your outcome. On the hard sets I'll often be training alongside you.

Strength, mobility, and movement most people never touch.Bodybuilding and powerlifting built the strength. Yoga, gymnastics, animal flow and calisthenics built the rest. You get the blend, scaled to where you actually are.

We start with what you can't currently do.Not with a diagnosis. My job is movement and capability: restoring range, building strength inside it, and getting you back to the things your body has quietly stopped offering. Anything that needs a doctor or a physio is their work, and I'll say so.

Jonny sitting in a wide straddle, talking to a group during a session

We don't stop at getting you comfortable.Once things are moving again, there's a whole other half to this: speed, power, control, real range. Athletic qualities, not just healthy ones. Most people never find out what happens when they train those in their forties or fifties, because nobody asked them to.

Gently firm. Not a drill sergeant, not military. Blunt about standards, easy about how it's said. "Come on then, finish it, you've still got three more."

Nothing gets explained in jargon. We're not doing loaded carries because we're training for the shopping bags. That's just a byproduct.

Progress is built, then held. The goal isn't a good six weeks. It's a body that keeps working when the sessions aren't happening.

What changes

Jonny mid-effort in a low lunge, shot from below

Concretely, over time

  • Movements you've worked around for years stop dictating what you'll attempt.
  • You pick up your kids without your body flinching first.
  • The shopping comes in from the car in one hand.
  • Training you've done for years finally starts moving.
  • You get faster and more powerful, which almost nobody expects to happen after forty.
  • Range you haven't had since childhood comes back, and you get strong in it rather than just loose.
  • Movements you'd written off return. Headstands, handstands, real athleticism.
  • You stop bracing before ordinary things, and start being surprised by what you'll attempt without thinking.
  • You show up consistently, because someone is actually invested in whether you do.
  • Ageing stops looking like a slow subtraction.

Worth saying plainly.Getting older doesn't have to mean slowly getting worse. That part is mostly down to how you train and how you live.

Proof

These are individual stories, not what I'd promise you. Every body arrives with a different history.

Seven years of shoulder stiffness. One client came to me having worked around his shoulder for seven years. Within eight weeks he was back to pain-free overhead lifting, and it has held since.

Lifting his daughter without his back complaining. One client's back used to be the reason he hesitated. That stopped being the limiting factor. He mentioned in hindsight that the numbness he used to get in his leg when he sat down had faded too.

A client in her 40s, years of training, little visible progress.Within three sessions of starting this work she held a headstand she'd been afraid of for years. She's moving into handstands now. She recently vaulted off a sofa without a second thought, where before she'd have climbed down from it carefully.

A retreat client, six foot nine.Couldn't manage a single push-up when we met, and was sweating buckets after five minutes. Since then: roughly 25kg down, strength training, pull-ups and push-ups, quit drinking, changed how he eats. He can touch his toes. A full 180 in how he looks after himself.

"Thank you for everything you've done for this family."

Unprompted, from a client

He said he wished he could train like this every time he travelled abroad.

Unprompted, from another

Years with trainers in London, two months here. She'd trained consistently for years and had stopped expecting much to change. Two months in, she's stronger than she's been.

What's on offer

1:1 personal training

The main way I work.Sessions built around your body, your history, and what you actually want to be able to do.

  • A proper look at where you're starting from
  • Strength, mobility and movement programming that changes as you do
  • Coaching in the room, not a PDF sent to your phone
  • Someone invested in whether you show up

Group classes

Experience-driven sessions, not a circuit in a car park.Smaller groups, the same movement work, a different atmosphere.

Ask me about the next one

Health packages, coming later

Supplementation guidance and packages, alongside full health panels. Bloodwork and VO2 max testing sit in there, among other markers worth knowing about.

Not on offer yet. When they are, they'll run alongside the training rather than replace it.

Who this is for, and who it isn't

Jonny watching a group work through a movement session on a terrace

This is probably you if

  • Your body has stopped keeping up with the rest of your life.
  • You've trained for years and want the plateau to finally break.
  • You've quietly decided something is permanent and you'd like to test that.
  • You want to be genuinely athletic again, not just comfortable.
  • You'd rather be coached by someone who knows your history than handed a programme.

This probably isn't the fit if

  • You want a plan emailed over and no contact after that. That works for some people, it just isn't what I do.
  • You're chasing a stage-ready physique. Not my speciality, and I'd point you to someone better placed.
  • You want shouting. There isn't any.
  • You want it done in four weeks. Some things move that fast. Most of the ones worth having don't.

About

Portrait of Jonny Brakels, laughing, looking off camera

At nineteen I was sat at a computer sixteen hours a day, levelling up a character while my own body fell apart under me. Tight, aching, twenty years old and already stiff.

I started training to fix it.Bodybuilding, then powerlifting. It helped, but it didn't hold. A bit of yoga was enough to show me how lopsided all that lifting had left me. So I kept going: gymnastics, animal flow, calisthenics, piecing together a body that could actually move, not just look like it could.

Then, on a men's retreat here in Ibiza,a Swedish guy, six foot nine and built like a wall, walked over and said, "I don't like you. You're big and you're mobile. You're shattering my belief that big guys can't be mobile."

That was the moment it landed.I'd built something unusual, and it was something I could teach. I've been teaching it since.

Questions

I'm not fit enough to start. Should I wait?

No. Everyone starts from where they are, and where you are is just information. The first session is mostly me finding out what your body currently does.

I've got something that hurts. Is training a bad idea?

Often it's the opposite, but it depends what's going on. I coach movement, I don't diagnose. Tell me the details over WhatsApp and I'll be straight with you about whether we start training or whether you're better off seeing a professional first. If you're already under a doctor or physio, we work around what they've told you.

Am I too old to get athletic again?

Most of the people I train are older than me. Speed, power and range respond at any age, they just get trained less and less as people get older. Age tells me very little. What you've trained for tells me almost everything.

How often would we train?

Anywhere from once to five times a week. It depends on what you're working towards and what your week actually allows.

Most people buy a block up front, usually ten or twenty sessions, and call them off as they go. They don't expire. If you'd rather not commit to a block, I can invoice at the end of the month for whatever we've done.

Do I need a gym?

No, and you don't need equipment either. I bring what we need.

Most sessions happen at people's villas. If there's a home gym on site, we use it. If there isn't, we work with what I bring, indoors or outdoors.

We can also train at a gym you already use, as long as they're happy with an outside coach and the membership covers it.

I've trained for years and nothing has shifted. Why would this be different?

Usually because the missing piece isn't effort. It's the range of things being asked of your body, and having someone watching closely enough to change the plan when it stops working.

How do we start?

Message me on WhatsApp. Tell me what's going on with your body. We'll go from there.

You can be more capable at fifty than you were at thirty.

Most people come to me because something hurts. They stay because they end up looking, feeling and performing better than they did years ago.

The cost of inaction is often far higher than the discomfort of getting the work done.
